Current Analogue

Morten Hjulmand

Atlético Madrid

Connect midfield possession with a runner ahead

Why the comparison works

Wieffer and Hjulmand are linked here for passing forward from midfield. Wieffer's Feyenoord analysis and Hjulmand's chipped pass for Sporting against Estoril in February 2026 provide separate examples. This does not imply that Hjulmand shares Wieffer's right-back assignments.

Shared qualities

Forward passing from midfield
Connecting with an advanced teammate

Where it breaks down

A separate main difference has not yet been established in the published comparison.

Historical Analogue

Owen Hargreaves

Bayern Munich 2002-2006

Protect midfield space, then connect forward

Why the comparison works

Wieffer's midfield recovery and passing connect with Hargreaves's Bayern 2002–2006 phase. UEFA's April 2002 report describes Hargreaves containing Zidane before trying to start attacks. This is a protection-to-progression link, not a claim of identical roles throughout either career.

Shared qualities

Central defensive work
Connecting recovery with forward play

Where it breaks down

A separate main difference has not yet been established in the published comparison.

A style reference for this phase, not a prediction of Mats Wieffer’s ceiling.
