Spearhead
An engine-driven striker whose primary value is pressing intensity — leads the defensive line from the front, forces errors, and sets the tempo for the whole team's press.
The job
What They Do
The Vertical Nine sets the tempo before the ball has even been played. They press early, they press hard, and they force the defence into decisions under pressure that teammates capitalise on.
This is not a striker measured by goals alone. The Vertical Nine's value is pressure — every second added to a goalkeeper's decision-making, every centre-back forced into a rushed long clearance.
The Tactical Logic
Klopp's Liverpool demonstrated the principle. Firmino was their pressing forward — not primarily a scorer, but the engine of a press that created conditions for Salah and Mané to score 30 goals each. Remove his pressing actions and the system changes shape entirely.
What They Are Not
Do not confuse with the Prima Punta, who waits in position and is measured purely by chances and finishing. Do not confuse with the Vertical Forward, who presses by sprinting in behind the defensive line rather than tracking the ball-carrier directly.
The Recruitment Warning
A Vertical Nine who stops pressing is finished. This role has the shortest effective window of any CF variant — physical decline after 28 removes the very quality that makes the profile useful. Monitor sprint distance and pressing intensity year-on-year from 26 onwards.

Recruitment context
Recruit young and deploy early — the pressing window is narrow. Target players under 25 with high distance-covered metrics and pressing actions per 90 above 15. Avoid signing a Vertical Nine past 28 unless the data shows sustained intensity; this role is defined entirely by what fades first.
