Adrien Rabiot

AC Milan

Arriving late in the box from midfield

Merino and Rabiot both start in midfield and attack the penalty area late, often as a near-post or aerial target. Merino's late header at Newcastle in September 2025 and Rabiot's left-sided hybrid role under Allegri at Milan in 2025–26 show the same timing. The comparison is about that box arrival, not about overall output.

Shared qualities

Late runs into the penalty area
Aerial threat from midfield
Physical box-to-box profile

Main difference

Rabiot's role under Allegri added flank duties out of possession, whereas Merino's 2025–26 deviation was a spell as a makeshift centre-forward.

Seydou Keita

Barcelona 2008-2011

Tall midfielder who runs beyond the line

Merino's late penalty-area arrivals and aerial threat recall Keita at Barcelona in 2008–2011, a tall, industrious midfielder who ran past opposition lines and covered several midfield roles. Keita's headed goal at Levante that clinched the 2010–11 title is an in-phase example. This compares movement and versatility, not standing within the team.

Shared qualities

Running beyond the opposition midfield
Aerial threat from midfield
Covering multiple midfield roles

Main difference

Keita was usually the first alternative to Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets in a possession side, whereas Merino's recent seasons have included spells as an emergency centre-forward.
