Why is Luke Shaw similar to Eric Abidal (Eric Abidal — Lyon 2004-2007)?

Why the comparison works

Defensive responsibility in two left-sided roles

Abidal’s Lyon 2004–07 phase offers a reference for Shaw’s ability to work at left-back or in central defence. The link is the defensive responsibility across those positions; it does not assume that their attacking delivery or carrying is identical.

Shared qualities

Left-back and central-defence duties
Defensive responsibility on the left

Where it breaks down

Unknown — a main difference has not been established yet.

A style reference for this phase, not a prediction of Luke Shaw’s ceiling.
